Unlike other review sites, we're not just a group of IT experts - though we do have a few awesome ones here. We're folks who have had to use hosting services to build real businesses: tech start ups, creating blogs, building plugins for Wordpress, marketing our services and products online - practical business issues.
We were frustrated by the process of figuring out which host to use so we built this site. Our focus is as much about providing comprehensive details about available hosting products as it is about understanding what practical problem you're trying to solve. Your primary concern is running your business, selling your products, or creating great content; we want to provide you with the tools to do that, because that's what we want too.
We spent months researching all the latest information on thousands of hosts (and their hosting plans) and organizing that by the types of uses. We keep researching and adding more information about available products in the hopes that we'll be your one stop shop for all hosting research. We believe that even the smallest hosts can provide great quality services, and that you should have the widest range of options to choose from.
If you find any information is out of date, or if you know of a host or provider we've missed, please let us know so we can add it.
Also, we rely heavily on your opinions and ratings of the services you love (or hate). If you have used a service, we invite you to submit your rating.
We want our ratings to be as realistic and fair as possible. To ensure that, we vigilantly watch for Spam. In fact, you'll notice that when you submit a review, it will take some time to appear. That's because we're not only running your review through a software Spam filter; an actual human is making sure the account isn't run by a spammer. Sure, it's a lot of work, but once we are sure a reviewer is contributing useful content, they'll be invited to add more.
There's also a set of math and statistical tools we use to make sure that more valuable ratings get more weight. Not to dive too deep into the geekery here, but we weight each review in part based on the helpfulness scores you give each other.
We adjust the helpfulness votes using a method called the Lower bound of Wilson score confidence interval; this ensure that the right amount of value is given to votes rather than a simple average. We also use this to adjust for the fact that some products get a lot more ratings than others, so those with fewer ratings don't appear to be more valued than others.
We also apply additional filters to make sure that sneaky spammers don't try to game the system and get their favorite products ranked higher than what the community really thinks are the best. We won't detail those because, well, we don't want them to figure it out, but we'll be doing things like assigning users a weight based on a number of factors relating to how engaged they are on the site, for example the length of their membership, how often they interact with other reviews, the amount the contribute and so on.
In the end, hosts that provide a great product at a competitive price with excellent customer service are what we aim to deliver through our comparisons.
Our site is like most all "free" resources on the internet. We need to pay for servers and for the staff that does all the initial, comprehensive research you see here. That primarily comes from advertising revenue and from some affiliate links. We try to place ads where we think they'll provide you the most value, and avoid the in your face variety because none of us like those either. We try to get affiliate links to all the products listed here so that there's no reason for us to promote one above the other; that we we're agnostic about which you select. Our belief is that by showing you what really is best, you'll be more likely to actually select and use that product. That is the only time we get affiliate benefits, so our goals and yours align. Lastly, wherever we are promoting a sponsored product, you'll see that clearly highlighted.
In addition to providing your reviews and ratings on the products listed here, you can help by nominating any products you use which we are missing in the catalog. In addition you can tell the product owners to claim their listings so they can see the feedback and reviews here and hopefully use that to improve their services! Lastly, if you sign up for our newsletter, we will provide you with useful tips and tricks to get the most out of your hosting, but you can also participate in surveys that help us develop high quality reports and tools for you and others to use. You can also contact us at any time with suggestions and feedback; we'd love to hear from you!
